How long have you been with Elite Youth Sports, and what does your role involve?

I am a Level 4 Apprentice Sports Coach, and I’ve been with Elite Youth Sports for just over a year. My role involves visiting different primary schools, where I teach PE to each year group and run after-school clubs in a variety of sports. I also coach our Soccer Tots sessions, helping introduce young children to football through fun, engaging activities that develop their coordination, confidence, and motor skills.

What inspired you to become a coach?

I’ve played football from a young age, which sparked my passion for sport. While playing semi-professional football for Swindon, I saw the impact that a good coach has on an athlete and wanted to make a different to the next generation. I have always enjoyed the energy of a sporting environment. Additionally, I love working with people. By becoming a coach, I can introduce younger athletes to sports that may ignite the same passion in them.

How does communication influence your coaching philosophy?

Communication plays a vital role in every session. I want everyone participating to enjoy the experience, so I encourage them to ask for help if they’re struggling or unclear on what to do. Furthermore, positive reinforcement is essential in my approach. Positive feedback can significantly boost enjoyment and confidence in a sport.

How do you continue to develop as a coach?

Every session I coach contributes to my growth and experience. Working alongside different coaches allows me to learn new techniques or session ideas that benefit my own approach. Additionally, coaching at various schools offers valuable experience as I adapt to different environments and work with diverse groups of kids.

What do you enjoy most about being an Elite Youth Sports coach?

I enjoy many aspects of coaching, but one of the highlights is building relationships with young athletes. I love helping them grow in confidence. For instance, seeing someone who starts out unsure come out of their shell and truly enjoy a sport is incredibly rewarding.
