What is your role at Elite Youth Sports, and how long have you been with us?

I joined Elite Youth Sports around six months ago in May and have loved every second. I started off in wraparound care, helping with breakfast and after-school clubs in primary schools. Over the summer, I began my sports coaching apprenticeship, working towards both my Level 2 and Level 4 Sports Coaching qualifications. I’ve been gaining practical sports coaching experience by assisting with PE lessons and sports clubs in primary schools. I’ve always loved working in sports and helping others, so the sports coach pathway seemed ideal. During half terms and summer, I also work as a sports coach, helping across our different camp locations.

Do you have any previous experience with sports coaching?

Growing up, throughout secondary school, I was involved in many sports coaching opportunities. I completed both my GCSE and A-level PE qualifications, gaining knowledge about sport and coaching over four years. I also worked as a sports leader, helping with coaching, umpiring, and assisting PE teachers with clubs. These experiences included coaching younger students and mentoring them as they began their sports leadership roles.

What inspired you to pursue a career in sports coaching?

I discovered my love for teaching children last year during a six-month volunteering experience as a teaching assistant in a local primary school. I worked one-to-one with multiple children, and this time solidified my passion for working with kids. I’d always enjoyed sports, so it made sense to combine my enthusiasm with a career in sports coaching. When I found out about Elite’s sports coaching apprenticeship, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to pursue my goals.

What has been the highlight of your coaching journey so far?

The highlight so far has been all the knowledge and practical sports coaching experience I’ve gained. I’m new to professional coaching, so every day is a learning opportunity. I love shadowing other apprentices and coaches at Elite, observing how they handle different situations and create a positive coaching environment. The challenge of understanding how each child learns and building positive relationships is an invaluable experience.

What do you think is essential for building a strong team dynamic?

Building a strong team dynamic requires a high level of respect and trust. You need to know you can rely on each other for support in any situation, a skill I’ve learnt throughout my life, especially growing up in football clubs from a young age. Being part of a team means fulfilling your role and having confidence that you’re surrounded by people who can offer guidance when needed.

What strategies do you use to motivate and engage children in sports?

As a coach in a primary school setting, I aim to create a positive and safe environment where every child feels comfortable. I prioritise the children’s development and growth while fostering a space where they’re confident and enthusiastic to learn. Techniques like positive reinforcement, celebrating achievements, and building a rapport of mutual respect help to engage them. I also make sessions fun by participating in activities myself, providing challenges, and offering support beyond just coaching.
