We’re delighted the government has officially confirmed the continuation of the Primary PE and Sport Premium for 2025–26.

The £320 million investment will support primary schools nationwide to deliver high-quality PE, school sport, and physical activity.

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is a vital investment in children’s physical and mental health. With continued funding now confirmed for 2025–26, schools can begin planning with confidence for the year ahead.

What Does This Mean for Schools?

  • The £320 million funding will be distributed to eligible primary schools in two equal instalments:
    • 50% in Autumn 2025
    • 50% in Spring 2026

This is a change from previous years, when schools received 7/12 in October and 5/12 in April. Funding will be calculated using the same formula as in previous years.

The reporting window for schools to confirm their use of the 2024–25 PE and Sport Premium funding is now open, closing on Thursday, 31 July 2025 at 5 pm.

This announcement provides much-needed stability for schools. They can plan, invest, and build sustainable PE provision that meets the needs of all pupils – especially the least active and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. (View the full DfE announcement).

Resources to Support Schools

To help schools make the most of their funding, the Department for Education and our updated PE and sport premium webpage provide:

  • Monitoring and tracking form – Step-by-step guidance to reflect on last year, link to whole-school priorities, set objectives, and evidence intent, implementation, and impact. Can also be uploaded to your website to show how funding has been allocated.
  • Spending tracker (Excel) – Record expenditure in real time. Totals are calculated automatically, making end-of-year reporting much easier.

A Win for PE, Inclusion and Long-Term Impact

Kate Thornton-Bousfield, CEO of the Association for Physical Education (afPE), said:

“This investment is absolutely vital to our profession and, more importantly, to our ability to deliver for young people in every school. This is testament to the hard work of our members and the wider profession, who share our ambition to move toward longer-term investment through the Primary PE and Sport Premium.”

– Kate Thornton-Bousfield, CEO of afPE

We echo afPE’s call for long-term investment, giving schools the confidence to plan for the future. Additionally, we’re pleased to see a stronger government focus on inclusion and the specific challenges faced by SEND pupils. Making PE inclusive, safe, and high quality is at the heart of what we do.
